A memorial fund has been set up by Johanna’s family and friends to benefit St. Malachy Elementary School, a school that serves a diverse population of low-income, North Philadelphia students. The student population is predominantly African-American and non-Catholic.
The Johanna Sigmund Scholarship is an annual scholarship given to a student who demonstrates community leadership, creativity and a zest for life. The scholarship represents the life of Johanna Sigmund, a young woman who lived life to the fullest, and who gave much of herself to the betterment of others.
The following students have received full scholarships through the Johanna Sigmund Memorial Fund at Saint Malachy School:
Jasmine Teauges graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School with Second Honors and now attends Temple University. She has decided to major in either education or law.
Portia Herndon is a West Catholic High School Junior. Portia has begun looking at
many colleges, with the hope of becoming a psychologist.
Latrice Thomas attends Imhotep Charter School here she is excelling. Latrice looks forward to becoming a doctor.
Kathy Charles is currently attending Little Flower High School, where she is a member of the National Young Scholars organization. Cathy is planning on becoming a lawyer.
Marvin Brown is the 2008-2009 Johanna Sigmund Scholar.
The Johanna Sigmund Scholarship affords these students the opportunity to attend the school of their choice, and encourages them to focus on their studies.
