Saint Malachy Elementary School is located in North Philadelphia, surrounded by a cluster of public housing units, with a majority of the area’s residents having less than a high school degree. Over 200 children and adolescents are served by the school; under 10% are Catholic, nearly 100% are African American and roughly 70% qualify for the reduced or free federal lunch program, an indicator of poverty.

The mission of St. Malachy School is to provide a family-oriented environment that encourages academic excellence and helps students become life long learners. The school also commits itself to promote the strong moral character needed to make hard choices, and a sense of social responsibility for self and others.

Many of the students at St. Malachy have overcome difficult situations with the help of the values and education provided by their teachers. The Johanna Sigmund Memorial Fund supports this learning environment by providing a special child with a scholarship, as well as supplying much needed funds to develop and expand the school’s many programs.
